I have been working with Jack for almost eight years. When we started, I was a Cat 4 cyclist and could consistently break the top 10 in competitive local races. In the years to follow, I won the Cat 1/2 Alberta Provincial road race & time trial championships 2x, Provincial & National Elite duathlon titles and the Canadian 50km Mountain Running Championship. None of this would have happened without Jack's guidance. My training in recent years has been calculated, balanced and consistent as a result. In the years we have worked together, I can count on one hand the number of times where I have said, “I need a day off”, or “I need a break”. This is because his programs are designed to produce sustainable change and results over time and he works with athletes to ensure they have enough sport/life balance to continue moving forward in a meaningful and positive way.
I worked with Jack (“JVD”) for four years. When I started with JVD, I was merely a rookie triathlete but with lofty goals and ambitions. I was training on my own, but I wasn’t using the tools at my disposal nor was I able to balance the demands of a full time job with a balanced training plan. This is where JVD came in; he worked around my schedule, prescribed flexible yet challenging periodized training plans and truly provided the guidance and expertise to deliver excellent performances on race day. In less than a year, I qualified for Worlds and was finally making fantastic progress towards a possible pro-card in the sport. JVD's deep well of knowledge in a multitude of endurance sports was a great resource during my rapid transition from triathlete to professional cyclist. He’s highly knowledgeable and approachable about training and performance. He’s a fantastic coach to work with and will definitely help you on your personal journey to smash your goals!
JVD was instrumental in my success as an athlete and a true pleasure to work with. His ability to understand data and strategize effective plans is world class and was invaluable to my development. JVD's attention to detail goes beyond digging into numbers, and involved working together to understand my body's subtle cues that dictated when to push and when to pull in the reigns. With JVD everything had purpose I always knew where I stood physically, which moderated expectations and garnered confidence. His mastery in the art of coaching allowed us to build a trusted relationship that pushed us both to become better each year. JVD has a relentless pursuit of excellence for himself as a coach, which will continue to translate into success for his athletes. I would not have had the same athletic success if I did not have JVD as my coach.
I have used Jack as a coach for about 3 years. I have always appreciated his technical knowledge, as well as his understanding of an athlete's individual needs. He provides the much needed 'what, why and when' as well as the 'how' so that I understood where loading and periodization was most beneficial, and when I did not need to add more, which is my usual default answer to any fitness and performance questions or doubts. Having the understanding and validation gives me confidence in the process, my training and myself.
People ask me all the time what the most important investment has been in my athletic development, and my answer is always the same; hiring Jack as my coach. Jack and I have been working together for over 3 years and he doesn’t settle for mediocre. He continually pushes himself to learn new things in his pursuit of self improvement and that results in pushing me to be my best. He comes up with fresh new workouts, working around my schedule, coupled with helpful feedback. Above all, my results have spoken for themselves, and I’ve improved markedly in each discipline each year.
I started working with Jack after ankle reconstruction surgery in 2017. He carefully and methodically brought me back to consistent training and paid close attention to my ongoing feedback. Since then, I have seen steady improvements from year to year. I previously thought this was not possible due to my age and time constraints. Jack is always flexible and will work within whatever constraints I provide (time or otherwise). Since the start of my journey with Jack I have become a national team member as a tandem pilot. This has brought on many new and exciting challenges! Jack was keen to help me take on these challenges, and 2019 was a breakthrough year for me. Jack was instrumental in achieving podium performances on the road and track at the Parapan Am games in Lima. I'm excited to continue working together to push through my preconceived boundaries. I'm extremely grateful to have him in my corner!
Jack came highly recommended by other athletes who had fantastic progression and results under his guidance. I was motivated to work with him specifically for his strong background in exercise physiology and reputation as a “numbers and science guy”—which matched my own scientific background. What I’ve come to greatly appreciate, beyond the extensive training that he brings to the table, is how hard he works to continuously improve his knowledge base and to develop a deep understanding of the cutting edge of human performance science. He is then able to apply state-of-the-art training approaches to his clients on an individualized basis.
Don’t confuse Jack’s scientific approach with a rigidity or a blind devotion to numbers. The biggest advantage of Jack’s knowledge base is how he can tailor a training program to meet an athlete’s goals and life circumstances. Jack has been exceptionally good at developing individualized training plans that make the most of the time that we have for training, and focusing on the performance of the whole individual/athlete rather than just our FTP numbers. The personalized training plans that Jack has developed for us have been an essential component in achieving our racing goals.
I've spent half my life being coached by various humans with the sole pursuit of achieving higher athletic performances. At least, that's what I thought coaching was all about, until I met Jack.
Jack showed me what it was to be a professional: in athletics, in my relationships, in life. Jack not only designed my cyclocross training for four years that guided me to four consecutive Cyclocross World Championships with Team Canada, but he was also a guiding light along the path of uncertainty in my process of becoming something I could not see yet, but Jack could. I now believe that this is what set Jack apart from the rest: Seeing the parts in you that you have not become, yet. And then helping you unlock and tame them with your commitment in tow.
I still remember our first conversation, Jack said "Give me two years, commit fully, we'll get you there." Where "there" meant racing among the best in the world with confidence and trusting that I could become one of the top riders in Canada under Jack's tutelage.
Two years turned to four, because when Jack says something, he delivers. For your commitment to Jack and yourself, you'll be giving yourself an incredible gift. Stick to the process, stick with Jack -- he knows how to get you "there" and so much more.
I have been coached by Jack VanDyk for two full competitive seasons and have achieved a level of cycling performance that I never believed was possible. Within this short time, Jack has coached me to multiple Masters podiums at the National and Provincial levels in Cyclocross and Mountain bike racing.
Jack has a genuine passion for continuously expanding his wealth of scientific knowledge in applied physiology and putting it into practice with his legendary custom training programs. It has been thrilling to put in the training and to successfully execute the race goals that we set out to achieve at the start of the season. However, I feel what really sets Jack apart from other coaches, is his innate ability or “gift” to dissect the unique strengths, weaknesses and personalities in his athletes. I feel that my coaching relationship with Jack has been successful because of his ability to accurately identify my weaknesses and build on my strengths. There is a constant, dynamic interplay between your feedback on the workouts and his interpretation of your subjective and objective data.
Jack is also very approachable and generous with his time by phone and email. He has also tailored my training program to fit with my personality, and busy lifestyle as mother, wife and physician. I have really enjoyed doing Jack’s variety of workouts and get a sense of satisfaction after each training session. I appreciate Jack’s style of support, which I would describe as encouraging but firm when required, which has allowed me to push myself beyond my previous limits. Even though I am in my 40’s, I am getting stronger and faster on the bike each year. Thank you Jack!
Jack has been absolutely instrumental in my success as an age group athlete. Over the last 4 years he's brought structure, balance and focus to my training. While Jack brings a full spectrum of training knowledge and experience to the table, for me, the biggest asset he brings is an understanding of the limitations and challenges that come with a demanding full time job and life pressures outside of training. He factors those elements into the training plans and he's able to push me hard in the sessions but makes sure I'm able to consistently complete the workouts. He's adaptable when life inevitably puts training on the backburner. He adjusts the program and keeps things moving forward.
Jack has been dynamic with his coaching and planning, helping me to peak for an ultra distance running event in the summer then shift gears to high intensity mountain bike and cyclocross racing in the fall. He was able to walk me through the training plan, talk through periodization and make sure I was focused on the right things at the right time.
Just when I think I can't get through a tough training session, I just lean in and know that he's set me up for success. The efforts are consistent with the next step in the progression. In JVD we trust.
Jack's experience spans 18 years of adding the right individualized mix that shapes people into the best they can be. If you are truly open you will grow as an athlete and person. I would not have 'turned pro', would not practice business the way I do today, in essence I would not be the man I am today without spending 8 seasons working with Jack.
I worked with Jack for 3 years and I have nothing but praise for him. I watched his athletes for a full season achieve great results in their respective goals including road racing, time trials and cyclocross. When I decided to approach Jack, he was open to listen to my barrage of questions and answered them completely. That sold me on needing a coach and he felt like the perfect fit for me. Some of Jack's best traits as a coach are:
-Pushes you to achieve your best for your key events.
- Is wonderful to work with and cares deeply for his athletes. Be it training, resting, life stresses or adjusting your training when you wake up and realize life just threw you a curve ball.
Jack is a great coach and I have recommended him to many friends that have gone on to work with him.
I have often found that Jack's vast knowledge has helped me break thru plateaus and avoid stagnation in my training. I attribute his input to some of my best days training and racing.
JVD Coaching is proud to have helped John Vanderveen win two Masters National titles in 2024 (Gravel & ITT). If you have big goals in 2025, the training starts sooner than you think. Let's connect and see what we can achieve together.
